How it works

A birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. This calculator works out the Sun, Moon and planets from standard astronomical formulas, then places them in two zodiacs: the Western (tropical) zodiac, tied to the seasons, and the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac, tied to the stars using the Lahiri ayanamsa. The two differ by about 24 degrees, which is why your Western Sun sign and Vedic Sun sign are often different.

Common questions

Why do I need my birth time?
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Without a time, the Sun and slow planets are still reliable, but the rising sign cannot be found and the Moon may be off near a sign change.
What is the difference between a birth chart and a kundli?
They are the same idea. Kundli is the Hindi word for a birth chart, usually drawn in the Vedic system with the Lagna as the first house.
Is this as accurate as a full ephemeris?
Very close. Over 4,000 moments from 1925 to 2035, the positions here were on average under a minute of arc from the Swiss Ephemeris, and under four at worst, while a sign is 1,800 minutes wide. Signing in gives you the full chart from the Swiss Ephemeris itself, with houses, dashas and divisional charts.
