How it works

This calculator finds the Moon's position at your birth from the main lunar terms in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms. The Western Moon sign uses the tropical zodiac. The Vedic Rashi subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa, and the Nakshatra divides the sidereal zodiac into 27 parts of 13 degrees 20 minutes, each split into four padas.

Common questions

Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western one?
The two zodiacs start from different points about 24 degrees apart, so the Moon often falls in the previous sign in the Vedic system.
What is a birth Nakshatra used for?
It sets the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha timeline, and it is the base of Kundli matching and many naming traditions.
Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?
Often, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a half days, so most dates give one answer. If it changed sign that day, you need the time to be sure.
