The rising sign is worked out from the exact time and place of birth: local sidereal time and latitude give the point of the zodiac coming up over the eastern horizon. The Western result uses the tropical zodiac, and the Vedic Lagna subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa from the same point.
Common questions
- How accurate does my birth time need to be?
- The rising sign moves one degree about every four minutes. If your time is close to a sign change, even a few minutes can change the result, so use the time on your birth certificate if you have it.
- Is the rising sign the same as the Lagna?
- It is the same point in the sky. The sign name can differ because Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and Vedic astrology uses the sidereal one.
- What does the rising sign mean?
- It describes how you meet the world and how others first see you. In Vedic astrology, the Lagna also sets the order of all twelve houses.
